It's no secret that the quality of Hollywood movies has been on the decline in recent years. Despite their massive budgets and production teams, many big-budget films have failed to impress audiences. From tired Marvel films to failed reboots, the question remains: why do so many modern movies suck?
In the past two decades, the trend of massive movie budgets has emerged. Research has shown that films with budgets exceeding $90 million have a higher chance of success at the box office. This led the big studios to focus on producing big-budget films while neglecting medium-sized films. The result? Too many cooks in the kitchen, with directors and studios micromanaging every aspect of the film. The creativity fell apart, and audiences grew tired of the green screen spectacle.
Another reason for the decline of modern movies is the shift in audience attention spans. With the rise of social media platforms and technology, audiences have become accustomed to fast-paced content. Long, dialogue-driven films from the past are no longer appealing to the TikTok generation. Movie studios are now catering to the lowest common denominator, sacrificing storytelling depth and character development for quick, action-packed plots.
The decline in the quality of modern movies can also be attributed to poor writing and ideological infringements. The overuse of the "strong female character" trope has resulted in stoic, unrelatable characters. Female characters are often depicted as physically equal to their male counterparts, resulting in unbelievable fight scenes. On the other hand, male characters have been stripped of their heroic qualities, leading to emotional crybabies lacking self-assurance.
Celebrities, once seen as glamorous and untouchable, now appear out of touch and deeply insecure. The exposure of their ignorance through social media has diminished their mystique. The ideological push for political correctness has also led to shallow, one-dimensional character portrayals, undermining the complexity of real human behavior.
Perhaps the biggest culprit in the decline of modern movies is the disregard for the hero's journey. Hollywood has neglected the time-tested blueprint of storytelling, resulting in films that lack a clear path of growth for the protagonist. Death has lost its finality, villains lack depth and genuine threat, and character development is often rushed or nonexistent.
Nepotism in Hollywood further complicates the issue. Children of established stars often secure roles not solely based on talent but also their lineage. This limits the richness of onscreen representation and stifles the emergence of new talent. The narrowing talent pool leads to predictability in performances and a lack of authenticity.
It's clear that something needs to change in Hollywood. The current trend of big-budget, shallow films is not sustainable. The industry needs to embrace diversity, prioritize storytelling and character development, and give new talent a chance to shine. Only then can we hope to see a revival of quality cinema.
